Is it wrong to say I didn’t do much research?

Hi all! Cassandra Dean here, ready to chat about FOOL’S GOLD!

Part of Decadent Publishing’s Western Escape, FOOL’S GOLD is the second in my Diamond Series. Set in the fictional town of Freewill, Wyoming, The Diamond Series centres around The Diamond Saloon and Theater, and the people who work and live there.

In FOOL’S GOLD, Christmas Eve has arrived and herald the beginning of a blizzard. Pearl la Monte, singer and star of the Diamond Theater’s Burlesque and Variety Spectacular, is by her lonesome, wanting nothing more than to rest and relax. A knock at the door disabuses her of this notion, and when she finds Ethan Garrett on the other side, her ire is raised…

Christmas in Freewill

Christmas Eve, the Diamond Saloon is empty of its people, and Pearl la Monte has a hankering to retire early. A pounding at the Diamond’s door rids her of such a fool notion. Her irritation rises when she sees the prissy, polite-like Garrett standing outside.

Ethan Garrett has a powerful need to gain succor. When the saloon’s voluptuous redheaded singer scowls at him from the threshold of the Diamond, he doesn’t stop to think on how his ire at her has disappeared. Or how he just wants to spend some time in her company.

When a blizzard storms in, trapping them, will they spend their time arguing or find their irritation for each other disguises something more?

The great thing about the second in a series is all the preliminary work is done. The world has been created, the historical references have been researched, the characters and their relationships are mostly established. It made writing FOOL’S GOLD not that painful, which is always nice! I could focus on other things, bits and pieces that helped make up the world.

Of course, I still had to figure out who Pearl and Ethan were, what drives them, what scares them, what drew them to each other. This was definitely the hard part. In fact, I realised after beginning that I had Ethan and Pearl’s personalities the wrong way round – originally, Ethan was the flirty one and Pearl the quieter one. SO VERY WRONG. Once I realised I was writing them wrong, swapped the dialogue around and had Pearl being all flirty and cheeky and stuff, it worked much better. Golly, it’s amazing when you realise such things! It’s like a lightbulb above your head, to be all clichéd about it ;p The story worked better, the characters were finally sounding like themselves, and it all just flowed.

So there you go! Not much research, and I had a complete story done and dusted. Gotta love it when that happens :) I hope you all check out The Diamond Series, and the people who inhabit it.

Thanks for hanging with me, peeps!

 Excerpt:

Turning on her heel, Pearl marched off toward the stairs.

A weird kind of panic jolted through Ethan, one he’d never felt before in all his days. It was…he didn’t…. She couldn’t leave him. “Where are you going?”

She whirled to face him, her irritation plain. “I was seeking my bed before your arrival, and now I’m seeking it again. Help yourself to whiskey this one time. I got better things to do.”

Shoving to his feet, he strode to her. “Don’t just walk away when we’re discussing things.”

“We ain’t discussing nothing. You’ll be down here, waiting out the blizzard. I’ll be in my bed, doing what I was gonna before you arrived. That’s the end of it.”

Taking a step, she made to leave him. Again.

He grabbed her arm. “Don’t leave me.”

“Don’t tell me what to do.” Glaring at him, she stood before the bar, her magnificent hair slipping from its pins, her breasts rising and falling.

Abruptly, his mouth went dry. Clearing his throat some, he said, “You’re supposed to offer succor to those in need.”

“We’re closed, remember?” Paint-less lips pressed tight together, she glared up at him.

They were so close he could see the faint marks of freckles on her skin.

Pearl La Monte had freckles.

A kind of haze came over him, tightening his skin and bringing with it something all-fired powerful and completely unstoppable. All the years he’d known her crashed through him, all the times she’d flirted with him and meant something else, all the times he’d seen her perform on stage and wished he could have held such fire.

Grabbing her upper arms, he hauled her against him and, ignoring her shocked gasp, he covered her mouth with his.

Guest Cassandra Dean

Today we get to find out more about my very special guest is the wonderful author Cassandra Dean.

·                     Which of your books is your personal favorite and why?
My favourite of my books...Oh noes, I can’t choose! They are all so special to me.
You know what, I think my personal favourite is the next one. It’s filled with adventure and mystery, because I have no idea what’s going to happen and there’s something magical in the unexpected! Also, there’s such joy in the creation of a new story, and the discovery of new characters and their discovery of each other. So I guess I’ll say my favourite is always the next one!

·                     Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given.
Leaf on the wind, given to me by my bestest friend, Joss Whedon*! This advice reminds my anxiety-riddled, over-active imaginational brain to relax, go with the flow. I have a tendency to over-think things, to examine a coming situation from every angle and try to predict the outcome for each. This is not so conducive to the relaxing. So now, when my brain starts overreact, I tell myself leaf on the wind. Thanks ever so, bestest bud Joss Whedon*!

* I might be imagining the closeness of our relationship. I might also have garnered this advice from watching Serenity repeatedly. Whatevs. I like my made-up version betterer, though :D

·                     One day I hope to:
Actually not over-think things. It is my Life’s Goal.

·                     What was the last book you read?
I borrowed Richelle Mead’s The Golden Lily and I spent a lazy afternoon reading it. Fun times! I quite enjoy the series, and really like the developing relationship between the protagonist, Sydney, and her love interest, Adrian.

·                     If you could take a trip anywhere for 30 days with money not being a consideration, where would you go and what would you do?
Scandinavia, Turkey and the Holy Lands, including Petra. Machu Pichu.
Living in South Australia, we don’t see snow. We hardly ever see mist. Thus, both hold a massive fascination for me, and I think it would be the bees knees to rock it in Scandinavia, snow-style. Fjords, baby, all the way!
Turkey. Hmm. I’m not too sure why. I just think it would be super cool.
The Holy Lands and Petra. I have seen my sister’s photos. I NEED to go.
Oh, and Machu Pichu, but I’d make it so I was carried up that path – have you seen where you have to trek?

Thanks so much for having me, Brenna!

(in ebook and print)

Ever curious, Elizabeth, Viscountess Rocksley, has turned her curiosity to erotic pleasure. Three years a widow, she boldly employs the madam of a brothel for guidance but never had she expected her education to be conducted by a coldly handsome peer of the realm.

To the Earl of Malvern, the erotic tutelage of a skittish widow is little more than sport, however the woman he teaches is far from the mouse he expects. With her sly humor and insistent joy, Elizabeth obliterates all his expectations and he, unwillingly fascinated, can’t prevent his fall.
Each more intrigued than they are willing to admit, Elizabeth and Malvern embark upon a tutelage that will challenge them, change them, come to mean everything to them…until a heartbreaking betrayal threatens to tear them apart forever.

~Excerpt~

Moments passed, the Earl’s impassive gaze weighing heavy upon Elizabeth. An overwhelming urge to twist her fingers assaulted her, but what if her fidgeting made him refuse?

He seemed to make some decision. “I shall show you carnal pleasure, madam. As you say, both to receive and to give. However, pregnancy should be avoided at all costs.” His eyes flickered, the first sign of something resembling emotion crossing his face. “I will not marry you, no matter the circumstance.”

Well, of course he wouldn’t. She wouldn’t wed him either. In any event, conception was not a concern for her, not after a marriage that had never yielded—

Good Lord. He spoke of practical application. He spoke of touching and kissing and—Was it warmer of a sudden?

He continued with barely a pause. “Actual penetration will be avoided. While many people extol the virtues of withdrawal, I remain unconvinced. We will discuss methods of contraception during your education, but the most effective method is always avoidance. You are in agreement?”

Still confused but now with cheeks aflame, Elizabeth nodded. In all her life, no one had ever spoken so frankly. This, combined with his matter-of-fact manner and lack of emotion, banished any lingering apprehension and left only the excitement. Glorious, thrilling excitement.

“Excellent.” Stepping close to her once more, he brushed his hand from her neck to her shoulder, the back of his fingers now warm against her skin. “Shall we begin?”
