Character Interview:
Hello, Wyatt. Thanks for agreeing to do this interview with
me. Would you mind introducing yourself?
I’m Wyatt Powell. I’m
a Ranger at the Black Hills National Park. And, since you already know it, I’m
a member of the Los Lobos Pack. My Pack mates call me by my Sioux name, Hotah.
What made you want to be a Park Ranger?
Actually, it was the
influence of George, a friend and former boss. I began working for him not long
after I learned to drive. I loved being out on the open range and working with
the herd. Even the nastiest, dirties jobs on the ranch were better than working
at a fast food joint or under the hood of a car.
The idea of being
cooped up behind a desk all day has never appealed to me. I always wanted to have
a job that let me be outside, in nature, at least most of the day.
After serving a few
tours in the army, I came home, went back to work for George and used my GI
Bill to get my degree. Landing the job here at the Black Hills was more than I
could have expected. It allowed me to be home, near my family and my pack but
still maintain a sense of independence.
There have been a lot of changes in the Tao pack recently.
What do you think of your new alpha, Drew?
He’s a good man. I
respect him and the efforts he’s making for the pack have really turned things
around.
My mom left Los Lobos
after my father was killed and returned to her tribe. To her family. When I
returned from my tours of duty, Grandfather warned me that I should keep my
distance from the pack. But I couldn’t completely turn my back on my pack
mates. I helped where I could. And when Drew finally stepped up we were able to
come to an agreement on how I could maintain my connection with my Sioux
heritage, advance my career with the Park and still support the pack.
What can you tell us about your pack family? The Tao pack?
Nothing.
Nothing? Not even a little bit?
No. You are not Pack. If
you have questions, you can ask Drew. I’m under oath to not speak of this
subject with outsiders. I take oaths very serious.
I see that. Well, that’s inconvenient for my interview, but
an admirable quality in a man. I suppose we could always read a few of the
other Black Hills Wolves books to get the inside scoop. Okay, so what was your
first impression of Isabelle - I mean, Dr. Acker?
That she was reckless
and could only mean trouble.
Obviously, something happened that made you change your
mind.
*chuckles* I don’t
know that I’ve changed my mind about that. I still think she can be a bit reckless
but I don’t mind it so much now. She’s my mate. That’s all that matters.
Awww. That’s sweet. I understand her family came to visit. How
are things going with them?
Pretty well. Her
brother is certainly making himself at home around here. *mumbles about
overprotective brothers* My mother and
Izzy’s mother hit it off pretty well. They spent one whole afternoon swapping
stories about us as kids. Izzy is never going to let me hear the end of a
couple of those potty training tales.
I don’t suppose you’d like to share any of those stories,
would you?
Not a chance.
Hmmm. I didn’t think so.

“Is that why you’re here? To study the environment? I
thought you were some big wolf specialist?” Wyatt asked.
“Wolves are my specialty. They are interesting because I
believe their behaviors, or more to the point, changes in their behavior
patterns can be an indicator of changes in the environment.”
“What do you mean?”
“They act as an early warning system if you know what to
look for.”
“So, what are you doing in the Black Hills? There aren’t any
wolves here,” he challenged.
“I think there are,” Isabelle said in a matter-of-fact tone.
He raised his brow to mock her words, but inside, an alarm
went off. “I’ve worked in the park for over five years. I’ve lived in the area
my entire life. There are no wolves here.”
She shrugged her shoulder. “I aim to prove that one way or
the other.”
Wyatt gulped the last of his coffee and stood. “Well, I hope
you don’t leave too disappointed.”
“We’ll see,” she said with a sly smile.
“Thank you for the coffee.” He set the cup on the table. “I
need to return to work.”
“So, was this a social call then?”
“Maybe a little of both.” He pulled a business card out of
his wallet and slid it under the mug. “That’s my number. If you run into any
problems, give me a call.”
“Thank you.”
He tugged the brim of his cap. “Be careful out here.”
“I will.”
With one last look, he headed to his truck. He hated the
idea of her staying out here alone. She may have years of experience camping
and be able to defend herself in many cases, but a lone female in the middle of
nowhere was asking for trouble. Anything could happen.
But it wasn’t his place to tell her otherwise.
Right now, his concern for the pack took priority. Her stay
in the park could endanger the secrecy and privacy they’d worked so hard to
cultivate.
Drew, their Alpha, would never allow that.
What would Drew do to her if he decided she was a threat?
After some of the vicious things his dad had done, pack leadership still made
him leery. But it would be worse if Wyatt didn’t report what he knew and things
spiraled out of control. Many lives—many families—could be affected, and that
he couldn’t live with.
As soon as he got in and buckled his seatbelt, he pulled out
his phone. His call connected. “It’s Wyatt. We may have a problem.”
